"The intragastric balloon is placed endoscopically and is an outpatient procedure with almost immediate recovery to daily activities"

Gastric Balloon

The intragastric balloon is inserted endoscopically into the stomach, the

completely outpatient procedure is performed with mild sedation and without

need no surgery.

After the correct placement of the balloon, it is filled with saline solution and a blue stain (methylene blue), thus partially occupying the gastric cavity (approximately 1/3). This occupation causes an increase in the feeling of satiety and as a consequence a decrease in food intake with subsequent weight loss.

There are currently several types of balloons on the market to adapt to the needs and requirements of each patient. Balloons are available in different materials (silicone, polymers), various sizes and with different periods of permanence (4, 6 or 12 months). There are also balloons to be filled with gas or even balloons in which an endoscopy is not needed for placement and is simply swallowed as a "tablet or pill".

From the beginning of the treatment with the intragastric balloon and during the follow-up period until the removal of the device, the patient will have personalized attention, advice and recommendations from a group of specialists in the area, who will help them change their eating habits, modifying their style and quality of life in the long term.

Both the placement and removal of the intragastric balloon are performed on an outpatient basis, so the patient is incorporated into their daily life almost immediately.

The period of permanence of the ball will depend on the desired weight loss objective of the person and the model or brand of the ball placed, and can be from four (4) or six (6) months to one year after its placement.

In case the intragastric balloon suffers some damage, a very unlikely situation, the person will be able to notice it, since the stain (methylene blue) with which it was filled will be eliminated in the urine. In this case, the patient should schedule a reassessment consultation with their doctor, with the peace of mind of knowing that said event does not imply a medical emergency and does not put life or digestive function at risk, being treated in a timely manner.

What people could benefit from the gastric balloon?

  • Women and men who are overweight or have a BMI greater than 27.

  • People with obesity who by their own decision do not want to undergo any surgical procedure.

  • Obese patients in whom surgery is contraindicated due to high risk.

  • As a technique for an initial weight reduction prior to any surgery.

What are the advantages of the intragastric balloon?

  • Gastric balloon placement is a completely outpatient procedure, without the need for any surgery and therefore without scars.

  • The endoscopic procedure is performed with mild sedation, without the use of general anesthesia and as a consequence will result in a faster recovery.

  • In the case of balloon placement without the need for endoscopy, the procedure is performed without sedation and with immediate return to daily activities.

  • Digestive endoscopy and intragastric balloon placement have a very low risk of complications.
